COLORADO SPRINGS – The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that pick-up trucks made up half of the top ten most stolen vehicles in Colorado for 2017.

Pick-up trucks from Ford, Dodge, GMC and Chevrolet made the list.

Specifically, the Ford pick-up came in at number one.

Local dealers say trucks can be a better target for thieves than cars.
That’s not just because of their heftier price tag, but because they’re built to handle Colorado’s environment.

“Trucks are a lot more valuable, especially with their four-by-four capabilities,” said Joseph Simon with Phil Long Value Car Dealership.
“It’s a big four-by-four off-road state, lots of people actually need them the terrain out here is a lot rockier, a lot more hilly.”

Nationally, the Honda Civic is still the most stolen car. That’s the case in Colorado Springs, too.
Springs Police say Honda Civics and Accords continue to be the most stolen cars in the city.

Even though these steps may sound obvious, they say most car thefts can be prevented if people simply lock their car doors, avoid leaving valuables in sight and refrain from leaving a key or fob inside the car.
