PUEBLO – It was a big day Wednesday for Pueblo Community College, as it received equipment and tools from Next Era renewable resources to help students learn about careers in solar energy.

The donation includes 52 solar panels and workers to help instruct professors and students, in anticipation of a clean energy boom in the Steel City.

Student Scot Gillaspie tells us he and his classmates are excited about this opportunity.

“I am interested in alternative energies and I have been getting hands on it,  getting a little bit of experience,”  Gillaspie said.  “I know my classmates are just as excited as I am.”

Next Era said last week that XCel Energy’s plan to close two coal-fired plants and increase solar and wind energy production in Pueblo might create jobs for these students.

That plan received preliminary approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission on Monday.
