COLORADO SPRINGS – A man who fled the scene of a minor crash was killed in a second crash near the intersection of S Circle Drive and Hancock Expressway Monday morning.

The second accident happened just before 9:00 a.m. and is being investigated by Colorado Springs Police. Officers said they found a single vehicle occupied by a deceased man and a dog.

The dog was found alive and taken to the Humane Society for veterinary treatment, police said.

Following the initial investigation, the car was originally involved in a minor, non-injury traffic crash near S Circle Drive and I-25. The car then fled the scene northbound on S Circle Drive.

Police said the car attempted to take the exit ramp to Hancock Expressway but failed to take the turn on the exit ramp. The car then went off the roadway, went across a grass median and struck a light pole.

The driver was later identified as 71-year-old Gary M Pierce of Colorado Springs.

The car continued east over the entrance ramp and into a drainage ditch where it came to a stop, according to CSPD. Police do not believe speed was a factor in the crash, but it is unknown if alcohol and drugs were involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
