MONARCH MOUNTAIN – Ski season is about ready to take over Colorado’s high country and as usual, opening day will come faster for some resorts. A-basin and Loveland are planning to open this weekend.

Monarch Mountain is still natural snow only, meaning their opening requires a close watch on the storm track.

The resort is working on several projects while they wait for the snow to pile up. Crews are working on removing beetle kill trees as well as completing a new tubing hill.

“We get so many calls about, you know, is there sledding in the area, is there tubing in the area,” said BL Holdinghaus.

Adding tubing with a tow at the top of the hill those who aren’t hardcore winter sports enthusiasts have another option to enjoy the resort.

“For tubing, you don’t have to have any experience, you don’t have to have any equipment, we have everything you need here,” Holdinghaus said.

Many of the beetle kill trees are being turned into mulch which is being used to help bring wild grass back to parts of the mountain.
