Senate President Leroy Garcia to vote ‘no’ on red flag bill

Senate President Leroy Garcia (D-Pueblo) gives remarks on the opening day of the legislature in January.

COLORADO- Since the bill’s release, it’s been a point of discussion at the state capitol: how will the Senate’s top leader vote on the ‘Red Flag Bill’.

Pueblo’s Senator Leroy Garcia confirmed with News 5 Tuesday evening he will vote no on the bill.

If it passes the Senate, it would allow a judge to grant an ‘Extreme Risk Protection Order’ to someone believed to cause harm to themselves or others.

The bill is expected to get a final vote in the Senate soon.

In 2013, two Southern Colorado lawmakers faced recalls after voting for gun control legislation.

One of the recalled lawmakers included Pueblo Senator Angela Giron, Garcia’s current district.
