MONUMENT – The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region teams up with Monument Police to provide a fun Friday night for local high school students.

They hosted an event called Slurpee With a Cop at their Tri-Lakes branch. Those who came out got coupons for free Slurpees and also got to enjoy several family-friendly activities. Monument police brought K9 officers to hang out with the kids as well as the headline attraction: the dunking booth. Students took turns trying to soak officers brave enough to step into the booth.

“It really bonds the community together,” says RAD Program Leader Lance Phillips. “It shows that the cops are working for us not against us, and it gives the students to learn about someone in the community.”

The event was put on by the RAD Program which stands for “Real Alternatives to Drugs and Drinking.” The events are put on by students, for students, and are a way for high school students to have fun on Friday nights. By offering an alternative to parties, RAD keeps students safe, while still providing them with the social events they enjoy.
