Wow Airline shut down suddenly, leaving stranded passengers on two continents.

BALTIMORE – Icelandic budget airline Wow Air has ceased all operations, according to the company’s website, leaving passengers stranded across two continents.

The airline’s ticket counters at airports like Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall were abandoned Thursday. But things starting going downhill Wednesday night after a 7 p.m. flight was delayed then canceled.

“I got an email this morning. No refund, nothing,” said Percy Andrews, whose Thursday flight was canceled. “I have connections with other airlines that are now… it’s up in the air. I didn’t have traveler’s insurance, a lot of people don’t, and so I’m out $800.”

All of Wow’s airplanes are grounded, forcing passengers to scramble to find flights on other airlines back to Iceland and Europe on short notice.

Wow Air began operations in 2012 and grew quickly, specializing in ultra-cheap flights between North America and Europe. The airline declared bankruptcy after six months of negotiations to sell the unprofitable business.
