Another cold morning and round of snow on the way, but what is the science that helps CDOT stay on top of those roads?

We talked to CDOT about the different solutions they use on the roadways.

One of CDOTs treatment products is Ice Slicer. It’s a solid product made mostly of sodium chloride. It also contains some other materials to make it more effective against lower temperatures.

That’s because if it gets cold enough salt can eventually refreeze. That’s why CDOT uses Magnesium Chloride in their road treatments

This is effective on roads as cold as 16 degrees Fahrenheit. CDOT has a modified magnesium chloride for when roads fall below 15 degrees. It has some added ingredients that greatly lower the freezing point of magnesium chloride.

All of these include an anti-corrosion agent, but it’s smart to wash those cars to get rid of film and residue just in case.
