CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx. – The south Texas man killed in a confrontation with Navy security forces at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi was identified Friday as 37-year-old Daniel E. King.
According to local police, King carjacked a woman at a gas station on Thursday before he was seen driving erratically and asking where he could find “the U.S. base.”
King reportedly drove onto the federal facility using one of the entrances, then led security forces on a chase through the entire installation before crashing into the other entrance and exit.
The stolen Ford Edge burst into flames upon impact from the high speed collision. King reportedly charged at security forces before he was shot and killed. The medical examiner listed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is one of two facilities in the Coastal Bend of Texas that provides basic flight training for most Navy personnel seeking a spot in fixed wing aircraft.
The gate where the crash and shooting happened is closed until at least Monday. There’s no word on why King went to NAS-Corpus Christi, a facility with tightly controlled security staffed by armed US Navy personnel and US Marines. Sister station KRIS-TV reports King has family in Freer and Houston, Texas.
