COLORADO SPRINGS – Around 120 runners laced up their shoes Sunday to help keep one of the city’s most scenic parks beautiful. The Canya Cañon is a fundraiser for the Friends of Cheyenne Cañon. Their mission is to preserve, protect and enhance the park.
The race is both a 5 kilometer or 5-mile run depending on the runner’s preference. It follows the along Columbine Trail in the 1,600-acre park. Rebecca MacNamee, president of the Friends of Cheyenne Cañon, said the money they raise will help keep the trails in top shape.
“We’re really excited for a few new trails here in the park, making some small connections so you can do more loop hikes,” MacNamee said. “The money also will support trail maintenance fees, if you build the trail you’ve got to maintain it.”
As with many races, there was fresh fruit and water for runners to enjoy at the finish line. But unique to this event, the folks at Eidelweiss also grilled up some bratwurst for the runners!
