WYOMING – A collision between two Union Pacific Railroad freight trains in Laramie County, Wyoming has resulted in the death of at least one person.

Investigators were on site of the crash along Interstate 80 where  56 cars derailed Thursday night when an eastbound train hit another that was stopped on the tracks.

Authorities confirm one crew member died and another is missing. Two crew members from the stopped train were able to run to safety before the collision.

The derailment is impacting local traffic in the rural area, but the wreckage does not pose a danger as no hazardous materials were on board the trains.

Cleanup efforts could last at least 10 days.

Union Pacific Railroad’s Safety Team handling the internal side of the investigation.  The National Transportation Safety Board is heading to the site for the federal side of the investigation.
