EL PASO COUNTY – A section of Old Pueblo Road in southern El Paso County is back open following a nearly two-month closure due to a washout during flash flooding on July 23.

The gap in the road near Birdsall Road was wide enough and difficult enough to see during the flash flooding that two cars and a Hanover Fire Department fire truck drove into the collapsed section, injuring one driver and two firefighters.

The $1.2 million fix replaces the old 4-foot-diameter corrugated metal culvert with two 7-foot-tall by 7-foot-wide concrete box culverts.  “We did not want to do this on-the-cheap,” said El Paso County Commissioner Longinos Gonzalez.  “We wanted to make sure that we put the money in to properly address this and rebuild it from scratch, basically.”
