COLORADO SPRINGS – Premature births present doctors with human life during its most fragile stage. On Tuesday, the doctors and healthcare professionals at Saint Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs celebrated the addition of a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to care for these delicate new patients.

The 46-bed addition includes several couplet rooms where there is enough square footage for mothers of twins to keep both babies in the room with them.

Other amenities include a wellness garden and balcony to give parents a space to rest and reflect.

Brian Erling, CEO of Penrose St. Francis Health Services said he his team are excited to bring this level of health care to the growing community.

“The growth in this part of Colorado Springs is huge and it’s a lot of young families,” Erling said. “Mom and baby are very important up here and we’re committed to delivering the highest quality care to those families.”

The NICU is part of a $102 million expansion currently underway at the hospital. A new emergency room and operating rooms will also be opening soon.
