The Pueblo West Fire Department is looking to recruit more firefighters to match an increasing amount of service calls.
The department said calls for service have increased nearly 50 percent since 2013, putting pressure on the department’s 21 firefighters to keep response times low.
Pueblo West Fire Chief Brian Caserta said he needs nine more firefighters to keep up.
"We have our days where we are stretched very thin," Caserta said. "Only having seven staff members work per shift is somewhat strenuous on certain days."
Caserta said the department is looking at ways to get the $650,000 needed to hire nine full time firefighters.
He also said the department is open to hiring resident firefighters as well.
