University of Colorado President Bruce D. Benson has announced he will retire, effective July 19.
Benson has been president of the university in Boulder since March 2008. He is the longest-serving CU president in 65 years.
In a statement, Benson says it has been an honor and privilege to serve as president of his alma mater. Benson earned a geology degree from CU in 1964.
He says he’s proud of the work that has been done to ensure that the university is one of Colorado’s most important public assets.
CU Board of Regents chair Sue Sharkey says Benson’s passion for education, commitment to diversity, business acumen and leadership have CU well-positioned for a bright future.
The CU president oversees a system of four campuses and is appointed by the regents.
