A 63-year-old hiker, who went missing Sunday night, was found dead at Ophir Creek Campground Monday afternoon.

A woman, later identified as Nuola Christ, flagged down a Custer County Sheriff’s Deputy on Highway 96 just before 7 a.m. Monday. She told the deputy her husband, David Christ, had gone missing from their campsite on Ophir Creek.

Nuola said her husband left their camp and went for a walk Sunday night but never returned. The deputy attempted to find Christ, but was unsuccessful.

Search and Rescue was then activated, where Christ’s body was found around 2:26 p.m. Monday afternoon. Authorities said his body was found approximately 300 yards from the campsite in a steep wooded area.

The Custer County Coroner will be conducting an autopsy to determine cause of death. This is an ongoing investigation.
