Multiple agencies assisted in the arrest of a barricaded suspect where a Canon City apartment complex was evacuated on June 25.

A barricaded suspect was reported in the 3300 block of North 5th Street that Monday. A perimeter was set up around the home where streets were blocked off and residents from a nearby apartment complex were evacuated, police said.

Residents were evacuated to the Canon Exploratory School at 2855 N 9th Street, while negotiations with the suspect were attempted. Police said the suspect refused to comply.

A robot drone was used to make entry into the apartment where the suspect was then taken into custody without incident, police said. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported during the incident.

Police said officers were dispatched to the area the night before regarding a domestic issue involving the suspect.

The suspect, later identified as Riley Zaragoza, was charged with Assault in the First Degree – Strangulation, Assault 2nd Degree, Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender, Aggravated Intimidation of a Witness, Reckless Endangerment, Child Abuse, Failure to Leave upon Request and has a current Parole Hold.

The Canon City Police Department, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Springs Police Department and Fountain Police Department assisted in the arrest.
