Police say a hostage situation is over following an hours-long standoff Thursday afternoon in Colorado Springs.

The suspect is now in custody and a 3-year-old child who was involved was handed over to police. Both the child and the suspect were not hurt during the standoff.

The situation started just before 1:45 p.m., when police said they were responding to a "critical hostage situation" in a neighborhood near the intersection of N. Nevada Avenue and Austin Bluffs Parkway.

Officers shut down Maplewood Drive and Mallow Road shortly afterward, calling it an active scene while SWAT officers negotiated with the suspect.

The suspect handed over the child to police around 3:45 p.m. and he was taken into custody about 25 minutes later.

The suspect has not yet been identified.
