Friday June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and in southern Colorado, a couple of events are taking place to educate the community.

El Paso County Adult Protective Services is hosting an event with Silver Key Services (Silver Key Senior Services Community Room, 1655 S. Murray Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80916) on Friday from 10 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.

In Pueblo, an event gets underway at 11:00 a.m. and goes until 2:00 p.m, this event takes place at the Pueblo Mall outside of JC Penney.

‘In our county, just as an idea, last year we had about 3,000 phone calls to our office and of those about half of them were screened in as cases that met state statute for abuse or neglect of an adult,’ said Aric Bidwell Supervisor for Adult Protective Services in El Paso County.

In Pueblo County, there are about 1,000 reports every year.

When it comes to elder abuse- there’s a wide variety of situations everything from financial scams to physical abuse in nursing homes.

Officials in both El Paso and Pueblo counties want to make sure everyone can recognize these different types of abuse to prevent it from happening.
