Call him Coach DeMarcus from now on.
The future Hall of Famer was hired on Wednesday, not part of the coaching staff but, as a "pass rush consultant."
Ware tried out last week and made it official for day two of mandatory mini camp.
Even though his title is pass rush consultant, head coach Vance Joseph said he will work with everyone on the defensive front seven.
"He has so much knowledge about pass rush—not just with those guys but also with (Derek) Wolfe and (Domata) Peko and the inside guys. It’s a good piece to have as part of our staff.”
Ware spent the majority of the second practice with the outside linebackers, the likes of Von Miller, Bradley Chubb and Shaq Barrett. And now he has a chance to dip his toe in the coaching waters with the team that brought him his only Super Bowl ring.
"First of all, in coaching, you have about 90-hour weeks, but I get to just pick and choose the groups that you get to work with, especially the defensive line and the linebackers. You really can hone in on the technique and not really have to worry about the scheme, but just instilling the championship mentality in the guys.”
Even though he looks it, don’t think for a second that Ware will be strapping it up anytime soon.
"I’m a dad now and being able to spend some time with my kids," Ware said. "But now I get a couple days here and there where I can come to the games and help the guys out. Come to practice and maybe train a little bit of training camp and throughout the season to really just help the guys out with a lot of technique work and see what they do.”
