Drivers identified in fatal crash in Teller County

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Teller County.

The crash happened Tuesday on Teller County Road 81 and resulted in one fatality.

According to State Patrol, a semi-tractor pulling a trailer was traveling south on Teller County Road 81 with a F350 pickup truck traveling behind it. As the semi began to turn left onto a private drive, the pickup attempted to pass it on the left side.

As the pickup attempted to pass, it collided with the semi and was sent off the road. The semi came to a controlled stop, but the pickup overturned.

The driver of the pickup was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. The driver has been identified as 31-year-old Leslie Karpinski-Hobbs of McCalla, Alabama. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The passenger in the pickup was also not wearing a seat belt and was ejected as well. This person has been identified as 28-year-old Richard Sarmiento of Cripple Creek. Sarmiento was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the semi has been identified as 60-year-old Volie Pyle of Woodland Park. Pyle was wearing his seat belt and received no injuries during the crash.

State Patrol said that alcohol and drug use are not considered factors in the crash at this time.

CSP’s investigation is ongoing and they ask that any witnesses to the crash call Trooper Eric Zachareas at (719) 544 – 2424.
