United Airlines is set to resume its safe pet transport program this summer with new restrictions.

Starting on June 18th, United will only accept reservations for cats and dogs flying in the cargo hold.

There are new restrictions in place to be aware of. Several short-nosed cat and dog breeds are banned from flying in the cargo hold including, Boston Terriers, Boxers, Pugs, Mastiffs and Persian cats.

The tighter restrictions follow several animal-related pet deaths and other mishaps that forced the airline to temporarily suspend the program in March.

United is also limiting when and where pets can fly due to concerns about temperatures.

From May 1st through September 30th, United will not allow cats or dogs to fly in the cargo hold to, or from, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Phoenix or Tucson.

The airline is working with the animal welfare group, American Humane to improve the safety and well-being of traveling pets.
