It’s sugar. It’s spice. Dunkin’s new ghost pepper donut is everything nice — if you like the combo of sweet and fiery.

As part of a “scary good” Halloween lineup of limited-time donuts, Dunkin’ just released the Spicy Ghost Pepper Donut. This classic yeast donut ring features a strawberry-flavored icing that features a blend of cayenne and ghost pepper. It’s topped off with red sanding sugar.

On Twitter, Dunkin introduced the treat by saying, “Grab one & show your spicy side.” The ghost pepper donut is available until December.

It took me three tries to track down this spicy donut at Dunkin’ over the weekend. Apparently they’re hot sellers (no getting around that pun), but I was persistent because I do love the one-two punch of a spicy-sweet combination.

Here’s what my ghost pepper donut looked like after I sunk my teeth into it for a taste test. (Note: It looks as though mine was made like a no-hole jelly donut, but there wasn’t filling in it!)

My review? At first bite I didn’t taste the heat, but then it snuck up on me and I felt a little fire in the back of my throat. The combo of strawberry and pepper was a bit off-putting, like eating a pink Starburst and Hot Tamale simultaneously, but in pastry form. Still, when you order a donut like this, it’s likely for the novelty factor anyway, right?

Dunkin’ also debuted some more overtly Halloween-themed treats in its holiday lineup, including a Halloween DIY Dunkin’ Donut Decorating Kit. The kit comes with plain yeast or Old Fashioned cake donuts, sprinkle blends, and pre-packaged icing in orange, white and chocolate varieties. It’s available in 4-count or 9-count sizes.

Dunkin’ also has a creepy-crawly Spider Donut that’s a classic ring donut with orange icing, topped with a glazed chocolate Munchkin donut hole treat and chocolate drizzle for the spider legs. Looks delicious, doesn’t it?

As for the gimmicky ghost pepper donut, it’s probably a better trick than actual treat!
