WALSENBURG – We now know more about what led to the death of a 41-year old mother of four in Walsenburg on December 20th, 2018.
Amy Garcia was found shot to death inside of a burned out car off of Silver Mountain Road near County Road 530 at around 1:30 a.m. According to the arrest affidavit obtained by News5, when officers arrived, the car was no longer on fire and they saw a deceased person in the driver’s seat.
They found numerous bullet holes in the driver’s side door and multiple shell casings nearby. Officers decided to approach the home occupied by Heith Gleason and his 12-year-old son to make sure that no one was injured inside. The back door to the home was open, but no one was found to be injured inside the home.
According to the report, the witness told police that Garcia and Heith Gleason were arguing over alcohol prior to the woman’s death. The witness says Gleason and Garcia drove to her home to get more alcohol before returning to the Gleason home.
The witness says Heith Gleason picked up a gun and stated, “I’ll kill her” and went back outside. A gunshot was reportedly heard before Heith Gleason walked back inside the home. Gleason then told the witness that he didn’t kill Garcia. The witness says a short time later, Gleason’s 12-year-old son went outside with a .22 caliber firearm and more shots were heard.
The witness then told investigators that Heith Gleason stated his son had “just earned his man card”, according to the arrest affidavit.
Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico tracked down the father and son outside a McDonald’s based on cell phone data obtained by the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office.
The father is in the county jail while the son is in a youth detention center. Both face First-Degree murder charges.
